An army soldier and a 17-year-old girl were killed when Pakistan troops resorted to unprovoked firing on the Line of Control in the Uri sector of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Saturday evening.

The heavy firing is the first ceasefire violation in the Uri sector.

“Unprovoked ceasefire violation with effect from 1715 hrs in Uri sector of Kashmir resulting into fatal casualty of one soldier and a civilian lady, Gulshan Bano, 17, a resident of Kamalkote,” a defence spokesman said.

He said the Indian army responded appropriately. “The exchanges continued for two hours.”

India and Pakistan had agreed to a bilateral ceasefire on the borders in November 2003 which held for a long time.
