Last updated on: May 10, 2012 21:56 IST

The Army on Thursday foiled an infiltration bid in north Kashmir Uri sector killing five infiltrators. This is the first infiltration bid in the Uri sector this year, according to a defence spokesman.

"Alert troops stationed on the Line of Control in the Maidan Nala area in Uri sector observed movement of five to six terrorists who were trying to enter our area. The troops of 34 Rashtriya Rifles closed in the ambushes around them," a defence spokesman said.

"On being asked to surrender, the infiltrators opened heavy fire on our troops. The troops retaliated resulting in the killing of five terrorists," Srinagar based defence spokesperson Lt Col J S Brar said.

"Bodies of four terrorists along with four AK-47 rifles besides other ammunition have been recovered till reports last came in."

"The body of the fifth terrorist is yet to be recovered as the area of operation is in very close proximity to the LoC. Identity of the slain terrorists is yet to be established," he added.

"Our troops are vigilant to thwart all such attempts aimed at disturbing peace in Kashmir," he further added.
