An Army major and a trooper were killed in a fierce gunfight in north Kashmir's Bandipore district late on Tuesday evening.

In a joint operation, the army and the police had jointly surrounded Chattibandi village of Bandipore district, 55 kms from Srinagar, late on Tuesday evening, after they received specific information about the presence of a group of militants inside the village.

"As

the security forces were laying the cordon, militants opened fire, resulting in critical injuries to an army major and a soldier," the officer said.

"They were rushed to the hospital, where both of them succumbed to injuries," said a defence spokesperson.

The army and the police were conducting searches in the area and the operation was going on, he added.
