With the recovery of two more bodies from the rubble, the toll in the Bhiwandi garment factory collapse in Thane district of Maharashtra on Thursday has risen to three, police said.

A two-storeyed building housing a garment factory had collapsed in Kalher village near the powerloom town in the wee hours killing one worker on the spot and injuring 24 others, they said.

Of the injured, 11 have been discharged and while the remaining are undergoing treatment at the local hospital.

Two bodies were extricated on Thursday afternoon during the debris clearing operations at the site of BIG Garments, located in Arihant Compound campus having many godowns.

The deceased have been identified as Munna Vazur Diwan (25), Virendra Sriram Krutpande (45) and Sajamul Shaikh Miraj (32), police said.

Around 12 fire engines and scores of personnel of civil defence and home guard are at the site carrying out relief and rescue operations, which is nearing an end.

A team of National Disaster Response Force had also arrived at the spot.

Incessant rains in the area are blamed for the collapse though there is no official confirmation to this.

Top officials including district collector P Velrasu, Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation commissioner Achyut Hange, Thane Police Commissioner K P Raghuvanshi are supervising the rescue operations.
