Noted constituional expert Fali Nariman has justified the police action against activist Anna Hazare on Tuesday, stating that that no fundamental right had been been violated by the law enforcement agency.
"No fundamental right has been violated. Section 144 was already in place and anyone who breaks the law can be taken into preventive custody," Nariman toldĀ rediff.com.
When asked about Shanti Bhushan and Prashant Bhushan deciding to approach the Supreme Court against the police action, Nariman wanted to know what would happen if the apex court refused to buy their argument and justified the police action.
"The trouble would arise when the court refuses to permit indefinite fast," he said.
Talking about Anna's mass support base, he said: "We are emotional people and we get moved quickly. Some misconstrue the emotional response of the people as solid support. But I do not think for a moment that he wants to be Lokpal himself. I can vouch his credentials on that count."
