The Centre is likely to constitute a judicial commission headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to examine the demand for carving out Telengana as a separate state from Andhra Pradesh.

The decision to constitute the committee came after the Core Committee of the Congress gave its nod for the bifurcation of Telangana.

The judicial commission is expected to be chaired by a retired Supreme Court judge, and it will have three experts as its members. The commission will be given a time-frame of eighteen months to submit its report.

The terms and references of setting up the committee are now being drafted and discussed between three Union ministers.

According to sources, three senior judges are in the running to head the committee -- Justice Sri Krishna, Justice Tarun Chatterjee and Justice Lakshmanan.

The three experts will be finalised from a list of 15 short-listed names.

However, Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K Chandrashekhar Rao has repeatedly warned the Centre that agitators demanding a separate state will not accept the recommendations of a panel. Pro-Telangana parties have termed the setting up of a panel as a delaying tactic by the Centre.
