All eight members of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board sent their resignations to state Governor N N Vohra on Wednesday. The governor heads the SASB. The resignations will pave the way for reconstitution of the Board and possibly ease tensions in Jammu, which has seen pitched battles between the police and demonstrators for several days now.

The step is seen as a beginning towards the resolution of the Amarnath shrine land row, which has led to large-scale violence in Jammu and the Kashmir valley for over six weeks now.

"The resignations are under the active consideration of the governor," a SASB spokesman said on Wednesday afternoon.

Governor Vohra, at his meeting with the Shri Amarnathji Yatra Sangarash Samiti, which is spreaheading the agitation in Jammu, had mentioned that the induction of eminent personalities from the Jammu and Kashmir regions would inspire confidence in the SASB's functioning.

Among the SASB members who resigned on Wednesday are former Justice G D Sharma, Professor Vishnu Murti Shastri, Sunil Sachdeva, Manoj Gaur, Dr Vimla Dhar, Professor Neerja Mattoo, Raghu Modi and Dr Arun Kumar.
