On the occasion of World AIDS day, the HIV and Human Development Resource Network, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme's regional HIV programme, has launched a media campaign to popularise Web-based anonymous, confidential HIV/AIDS counselling for people in India and other countries in the Asia Pacific region.

The campaign focuses on breaking barriers to AIDS related information and services.

'Authentic and credible Information is the first line of defence and helps in prevention of HIV/AIDS,' says Sonam Yangchen Rana, senior policy advisor and coordinator, UNDP Regional HIV and Development Programme for Asia.

'There has been a growing demand for online counselling as people are still reluctant to visit the Voluntary Confidential Counselling & Testing Centres due to fear of stigma and discrimination,' says G Pramod Kumar, senior programme specialist, UNDP HIV & Development Programme Asia & Pacific Regional Centre.

'When you are suddenly gripped by the fear of HIV after a possible risky exposure, you don't even know where to go. What they need is assurance, risk assessment and reliable referrals,' he adds.

The portal  hosts a consultation room, which

takes questions from visitors. A panel of medical experts from Wockhardt Hospitals, an associate hospital of Harvard Medical International, provides the answers.

People who have all kinds of doubts and fears, many caused by bits and pieces of information picked up from not-so-reliable sources, can get their doubts clarified and fears allayed by a credible panel of HIV/AIDS specialists.

The portal guarantees an answer within 24 hours Monday to Friday.
