Whose weapon was used to kill Rajbir Singh?

March 27, 2008 03:28 IST

In a new turn to the murder of Delhi Police's controversial encounter specialist Rajbir Singh, doubts have cropped up about the claim made by his alleged assassin that the police officer's own revolver recovered from the scene of crime here was used to kill him.

Rajbir's alleged killer Vijay Bhardwaj, a property dealer, had claimed that he had gunned down the police officer on Monday night with the .32 revolver recovered from the scene of the crime and the weapon was given to him by Singh himself three days before the incident.

Sources, however, said the two bullets that hit Singh were apparently not fired from the recovered weapon, hinting at the possibility of another gun having been used in the crime.

The picture will be clear after the ballistic report is received, the sources said.

Joint Commissioner of Gurgaon Police Manjit Singh Ahlawat said a police team has been sent to Kanpur where the seized revolver was manufactured.

The police team will seek to establish the identity of the owner of the weapon and how it reached Bhardwaj, he said.

The police have seized two empty cartridges from the spot of the crime and two live cartridges from the weapon, said Ahlawat, adding two shots had been fired at Singh.

Singh, controversial police officer with 56 kills to his credit, was shot dead on Monday night over a dispute on 'investments' he had made with Bhardwaj.

Rajbir Singh's service revolver was kept in the briefcase which was lying in his vehicle, Ahlawat said.

The officer ruled out any possibility of involvement of Chotta Rajan's associate Bunty Pandey in Singh's killing as claimed by latter.

"Singh's killing is not directly or indirectly linked to the underworld as per the investigation so far," Ahlawat said.

"Singh came to Vijay Bhardwaj's office to collect Rs 95 lakh from the latter," Ahlawat said about the incident.

Singh enjoyed 'Z' category protection but his Personal Security Officer Neelu Ram was near a petrol pump at the IFFCO chowk at the time of incident, the Gurgaon Joint Police Commissioner said.

One of the escort vehicles of Singh was at IFFCO chowk and another near the spot at the time of incident.

Meanwhile, the autopsy report of Singh says a bullet pierced right through his head and was the cause of his death.

There were no external injuries or bruises on Singh's body except the injuries of the bullets that caused his death.

S K Sharma, who was involved in Singh's post-mortem, said, "One of the bullets pierced right through his head and was likely to have been fired from the front and caused his death".
