Twelve people, including children, were killed and 13 others injured in landslides triggered by heavy rains in suburban Andheri, in Mumbai's western suburbs, on Thursday night, the police said.

The landslides hit LBS Nagar at Sakinaka on Thursday night, damaging around 15-20 houses, said Additional Commissioner of Police Amitabh Gupta, adding that 10 fire engines are engaged in clearing the debris from the spot.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Friday announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the families of those who were killed in the accident.

Families of the injured victims will get compensation ranging between Rs 25,000 and Rs 50,000 depending on the intensity of the injuries, a state official said.
