Despite drubbing, Congress to celebrate Gogoi-led govt's anniversary

Even though the Congress was only able to win three of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, the party will celebrate its third year in power on June 1. Anurag Kashyap reports

It appears that the severe loss at the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party has not affected the Congress government in Assam. The party said they will be going ahead with its plan of celebrating the third anniversary of the Tarun Gogoi-led government.

The state council of ministers led by Tarun Gogoi have decided to go ahead with the plan to celebrate the completion of the third successful year of the Congress government in the state. The anniversary will be celebrated most likely on June 1 in Guwahati to highlight the achievements of the state government.

According to a spokesman of the government, the Congress government has decided to send two separate thanksgiving letters to the United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, to appreciate the support provided by them and facilitating all-encompassing development in the state.

The council of ministers in a meeting refrained from analysing the party’s poor performance in the just-concluded Lok Sabha election. The party was able to only bag three seats of the 14 Lok Sabha seats whereas the Bharatiya Janata Party won seven of the seats.

Tarun Gogoi’s offer to resign as chief minister in wake of the dismal performance of the party in the polls was also rejected by the leaders. Following the party’s drubbing, Gogoi had announced he would quit as chief minister within a week’s time by sending a letter to Sonia Gandhi. However, he said he would continue working for the party and the people of Assam.
