Nomination: S M Krishna, Chief Minister of Karnataka
Reason: For constituting BATF, starting new initiatives in IT and bio-tech, being "honest" and hardworking for a politician, especially a Congressman and with clowns (read "ministers") around him. I vote for him not because he has affected India a lot (or just Karnataka or even Bangalore), but because he is probably the one person that politicians and people all over India should emulate if our country has to progress and lead the world. I know it is an odd choice, but I can't find anybody who has consistently delivered throughout the year.

Wed Dec 26 23:48:11 2001
Name: Chirag Patel
Email: chirag_45@hotmail.com
Nomination: Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Reason: No doubt it was one of the worst years for India in terms of the natural disaster and economic slowdown, even though I think NDA government led by BJP has done and is doing the best in the given circumstances. I as an indian citizen feel that security of country is safer in the hands of present government compared to Congress or Mulayam or Laloo or Jayalalitha... They are tough on terrorists, banned SIMI, promoting POTO. Best thing of all was the offensive diplomatic drive NDA government adopted against pakistan during the Afghan war. No government in the past represented our case so powerfully to the western world. Hence, the leader of NDA, Vajpayeeji, deserves appreciation in these tough times.

Wed Dec 26 23:49:07 2001

Name: Saravani Venigalla
Email: svenigalla@yahoo.com
Nomination: Koneru Humpy, Hari Krishna, Paes and Bhupathi
Reason: India is giving good players, we have to encourage these young players to stay in India and represent our Great Nation. Sports is the one known to everyone, not our dirty rotten Movies.

Nomination: J Jayalalitha (However you spell that Lady Elephant)
Reason: She has another lesson for Indian politicians that you can fool Indian public at all levels and use most corrupted bureaucratic machinery any way you like. I respect her for writing, scripting and directing shit political drama and pulling dhoti of karunanidhi. Mera bharat mahan!!! Jai Hind!! (whatever that means)

Thu Dec 27 00:11:08 2001
Name: Bhavna

Thu Dec 27 00:48:19 2001
Name: sakib
Email: sakibmerchant@rediffmail.com
Nomination: Tehelka Team
Reason: I think that the Tehelka team surely has done a terrific job for us complacent Indians into waking up from a stupor. They did it against I believe a lot of pressures which would surely have made them think a hundred times before going public, but that they stood their ground is nothing but a triumph of honesty over the morass and decay in public life. Thu Dec 27 01:25:53 2001
Name: Nagendra Murti
Email: nvmurti@netscape.com
Nomination: S M Krishna -- CM of Karnataka
Reason: Against all odds:

  1. no co-operation from the centre because his is a congress govt.
  2. Being neighbours with TN, which is clearly favoured by political top brass for incredibly selfish interests.
  3. Took over when grass-root level corruption was at its peak
, Krishna has put some momentum behind overall development. Electricity supply is less erratic, public servants are a little more accountable, road conditions have improved a little. Bottom line -- there has been the tiniest fraction of progress, no mean feat in a country such as ours!

Reason: We need to recognize those heroes who have fought single handedly and those who will need a lot of encouragement in order to cleanse the system and uphold Indian values of social equality and integrity. Medha Patkar represents India's fight towards social equality while Tarun Tejpal represents a sincere effort to uproot corruption and lack of integrity. Name: Ganesh
Email: ganeshtm@rediffmail.com
Nomination: BSF Jawans who were butchered at the Bangladesh border
Reason: For me, they represent India. And how India and its politicians were unkind to them. They were butchered by a country who owe us their freedom. A befitting reply would have been a strong message not to mess with our country and it would have been the best tribute to those jawans who laid down their lives, but our own peace-loving netas didnt budge an inch so as not to trouble their 'sister'. They never cared when these brave and undemanding jawans are murdered and mutilated, but they started raising war noises when their own forts were attacked and their own lives were under threat. Those netas are the scourge of our nation and I wouldnt mind some of them being killed in that Parliament attack save for that symbol of our democracy.

Nomination: Nandita Das
Reason: For exposing social injustice and oppression in India through her carefully selected and brilliantly portrayed roles in movies. Movies are an extraordinarily strong mass medium in India, and Nandita Das deserves full marks for continuing to leverage this medium this year with Bawandar.

Name: Sanjay A
Email: sanjay_a@hotmail.com
Nomination: Defence Minister George Fernandes
Reason: He has been India's best defence minister since India's independence. Also the recent so-called 'coffin scam' has turned out to be a big blunder for opposition and the media as the recent reports clearly vindicate the defence ministry from any mishandling of the coffin deal during Kargil. I would urge the media to do their research well before writing maligning articles about India's defence minister. Probably I can help in getting you the material from other online news sites to clear your doubts about this issue.

Name: Pratap Kumar Mishra
Email: pratap_km@rediff.com
Nomination: Atal Bihari Bajpai
Reason: He led the country in difficulty times despite the fact that his government is a coalition of 25 parties. His handling of the post-Sep 11 situation is commendable though shaky initially. Name: Mrs Mohana Panchapakesan
Email: mohana@rediffmail.com
Nomination: common man of course
Reason: my vote goes to common man as he is the only one who showed extreme tolerance for all hazards -- natural or otherwise. He deserves more than just erection of a statue.

Thu Dec 27 06:08:53 2001
Name: arvind
Email: vishaal5@hotmail.com
Nomination: Sunny Deol
Reason: When bollywood keeps giving run of the mill song and dance nonsense with supposedly superstars, here is the man who not only rewrote box-office history with Gadar but actually gave All Indians something to cheer about and hope for better with Gadar and Indian. He also brought back to life the tragedies of partition with his natural and super real acting, something which has never been told to current generations of Indians... Sunny certainly deserves to be the man of the year for making us believe in India and also making us part of partition history...
