Vajpayee is not only the last living legendary leader, he is also standing proof that Congress is not the only party in India. He has made such brave decisions (like the Pokhran tests, WTO stand etc) which none of the Congress PMs would have done... And only becoz of him the coalition of some 17 parties stands together and is living as the 'longest standing' coalition government... Nomination: none
Reason: the indian died years ago... all that we have are people who bask in the glory that they live in india. politicians who sell india. educationists and so-called literate people who want to fight over calcutta and kolkata. what have we given to india in these years of so-called freedom when we are still afraid of the corrupt system we live in? if you really have to name an indian of the year vote for the simple man who has lived his life wondering what will happen next and is still brave enough to cast his vote for some politician who promises him a lot. sad, we have none to be voted for an indian of the year. each name you have here is there with some cause or other which has some financial gain linked. i am proud to be an indian, but sadly i am not even allowed to unfurl my flag openly. shame on us.

Nomination: Myself
Reason: I should be the Indian of the Year, and I am not kidding. Even after intense humiliation inflicted on me and my wife by the Delhi Airport Authorities because I happen to be from North India and my wife from South India (exact words of the Immigration Officer were: How can a North Indian be married to a South Indian?) Reason: Some people are good... others are great. Vajpayee belongs to the latter group. Leading a country where opposition makes a fiasco out of everything, where people don't feel patriotic about the country and where the second rung of leaders are just not good enough, this 78-year-old gentleman has led the country to greater heights. Not only is he the man of the year but man of the last decade too.

Name: Drupad Patel

Wed Dec 26 20:10:39 2001
Name: Manish Mittal
Email: manmitt@rediffmail.com
Nomination: Aamir Khan
Reason: The method I followed was of elimination, rather than selection. Look at the categories:
-- Political Leadership: Obviously no one here.
-- Business Leaders: None here either.
-- Artists: None.
-- Sportsperson: Maybe Gopichand's feat is outstanding, but the Indian of the year should have impacted a majority of Indians. He didn't.

Name: Rohit Kartikeyan
Email: amarmawl@rediffmail.com
Nomination: Pulella Gopichand
Reason: The year overall was a terrible one... internationally. At such a time, the sporting arena remains a place where the human spirit can be celebrated without the now obligatory cynicism. Sporting achievements especially are measured not on absolute terms but more on a relative basis. It then becomes obvious that the greatest Indian sporting breakthrough came with the victory of Pulella Gopichand in the All-England Badminton Championship. It is for this reason that we should celebrate the man!

Reason: My choice is J P Yadav, the security assistant who died trying to stop the militants who tried to force their way into Parliament. If not for his alert act, we do not know how bad the day could have been for Indian Democracy. In failing to honour selfless, ordinary citizens of India who strive to protect her every day, we would be committing the gravest sin ever by men to their country. For Actors, Sportsmen, Politicians, Businessmen do it for a gain (whatever be the justification), but people who never think twice before putting their lives in line of duty MUST be honoured and saluted, otherwise we fail to be what we are -- INDIANS...
