Name:vinay tergaonkar
Email:vinay@ncbs.tifrbng.res.in
Nomination:none
Reason why:
I think to nominate someone just for the sake of records is not worthwhile. None of the people suggested in this note of yours or even otherwise have substantially improved the way India will move in the 21st century. I think if this award so to say is not given --it might mean more than if it is given to people who have achieved things for themselves rather than for India. It might propel some of these achievers to perform for larger interests than they have been.
Name:Chirag Panjikar
Email:pankast@vsnl.com
Nomination:Bal Thackeray
Reason why:Throughout this year Mr Remote Control has given us examples of how to (or rather how not) to behave in public. In his own way he has taught the free people of this free country ways to express themselves in public and brought a new meaning to the term "freedom of expression ". I, as a proud Indian, stand to "salute" this great revolutionary in his bid to rid our society of "anti-cultural" elements and impose his own brand of hypothtical and imaginary Indian culture.
P.S.: If Saheb is not given his due reward he may just tear apart your offices!
Name:Rajesh
Email:rajeshmp@hotmail.com

Reason why:He made India feel proud by getting the Nobel prize.
Name:Rakesh C Nautiyal
Email:nautiyalr@yahoo.com
Nomination:Sonia Gandhi
Reason why:The lady has singlehandedly transformed the political scenario of the nation. By rejuvenating the dying CCongress she has emphatically proved that she is taller than all those old warhorses who, in their powerlust, had started making all sorts of compromises by making strangest of political alignments. By shrewdly and patiently expoliting the weakness of her opponents she has slowly brought back the Congress to its past frontline position and by doing so has clearly demonstrated that she is not in tearing hurry to grab power at the Centre. In the process she has emerged as the undisputed leader of her party and a future 'prime minister-in-waiting.'
Name:siva

In every passing year, the Indian is more sophisticated in his spheres.
Name:P Suresh Kumar
Email:sure33@hotmail.com
Nomination:Shekhar Kapur
Reason why:Being nominated for the Golden Globe awards is not a joke. Over the years he has directed films like Masoom, Bandit Queen and now Elizabeth
all of high quality. Getting a Nobel prize is easy, but being nominated for the Golden Globe -- that too an Indian director -- is very dificult. So i vote him as the Rediff Indian of the year.
Name:Sridhar Dhulipala
Email:dhulis@hotmail.com
Nomination:Chandrababu Naidu, CM of AP
Reason why:Probably he marks the beginning of a new trend in the kind of politicians India will produce: smarter, genial, tech savvy, long term thinkers. The next step is openness and accountability.

Name:Sampath Aravamudan
Email:aravamudhan_as@yahoo.com
Nomination:Abdul Kalam
Reason why:Any country has to be
powerful to command respect
by others which happenes
because of him. He never does
anything for money sake or
went abroad for a lucrative
career. In both these cases
all other famous Indians fail.
He hails from a remote village
in TN , which according to
Mahatma Gandhi is the real
India.
Name:aditi gulati
Email:aditi_gulati@hotmail.com
Nomination:Sachin Tendulkar
Reason why:Because he is the best thing that happenned to Indian sports. His smile gives an aura of confidence which is very heartening in an otherwise bleak scenario the world over. His fierce protectiveness regarding his family is soul warming.

Name:meyyappan
Email:meyyappans@hotmail.com
Nomination:Chandrababu Naidu -- CM Andhra Pradesh
Reason why:Mr Naidu, in my view, deserves to be the Rediff Indian of the year. He is a great visionary, who not only had the ideas but also made it work. He has set the trend for others to follow in many other states. His work is really laudable in going out of his way to see that his state is computerised. He has woken up the sleeping potential in others. Truly he is the torchbearer for the IT industry in India. His efforts has been recognised by world giants such as Bill Gates !!!
There could not be better person who could fit the bill
Name:Ddayal
Email:ddayal@mailcity.com
Nomination:Sabeer Bhatia
Reason why:There have been a lot of Indians, in the past year who have done great work and show
phenomenal results for themselves and for the nation.
But all of them did it the typical Indian way -- slow, lacking the killer instinct and
and very passion-less.
But Sabeer Bhatia has made so much of a name for himself and for his country, proving that Indians too know how to re-invent technology and how to use technology for making money the American way.
When he struck a deal of the year with Bill Gates over Hotmail, he proved that even Indians can be very shrewd and
smart businessmen, unlike the lazy and fatalist and god-fearing businessmen they are made out to be.
Name:Devadas
Email:Debu_midu@hotmail.com
Nomination:Amartya Sen
Reason why:He is the first person winning a Nobel Prize for economics from Third World countries. Most of his works is related to poverty and social justice. He has also emphasised primary education. These are my reasons for voting as the Rediff Indian of the year.
Name:G. Seetaram
Email:essargee@hotmail.com
Nomination:Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Reason why:He is the man who dedicated his life fully for politics without expecting anything from the nation. He is the one most acceptable personality among our politicians across all parties.
He is the one who has sincerely worked for the people and prosperity of the nation.
With all these qualities, strictly speaking he is not suitable for current politics. Even then
he is trying his best to take the nation forward amidst all unfavourable conditions such as bad economic
conditions, unrest in people, selfish politics and his health. India
has got everything abundant except great and sincere leaders like him. For the health and prosperity
of the nation, we need people like him. To encourage such leaders, I think this award should
go to him. By doing so, this award will felicitate itself.
Thank you very much for this opportunity.

Name:Vidyasagar Tontalapur
Email:v_tontalapu@emerson.edu
Nomination:Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Reason why:Despite the compulsions of today's
Indian politics, Vajpayee has given
the country a new direction. For the
first time since Lal Bahadur Shastri
we have a prime minister who is respected
by all sections of Indian
society and whose integrity and
commitment to the nation is beyond
any shadow of doubt.
Vajpayee has put Indian interests
above everything and been pursuing a
policy that is practical and far-sighted.
Ironically, emerging stronger and more
assertive after the BJP's debacle in the assembly
election, Vajpayee has shown that he will
not let ideology become a dogma that
stalls India's march towards
progress.
Although the Vajpayee government's achievements
in the last 10 months is far from
spectacular, it has given the country a
feeling of security and purposefulness
in the time of turbulence. Stringent
action against ISI activities in
India is a good example of this.
Name:Neeraj Arora
Email:neeraja@qualcomm.com
Nomination:Abdul Kalam
Reason why:He has won the hearts of many
Indians by helping India display

really support the use of nuclear

this capability and we can and will
use whenever it is required..

athletic events.
Kudos to her and a wish to see
her win many more golds in
future.

Name:J P Narain
Email:jnarain@hotmail.com
Nomination:Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Reason why:He is the only person in Indian politics today who is liked by both his party and Opposition members.
He is a highly secular person in today's scenario.
Other parties/politicians cry for secularism to increase
their votebanks, but the honourable PM is really secular.
He neither praises nor curses Muslims. He also
thinks about the 80% majority. In his regime only
the minorities are safe.

Nomination:AMARTYA SEN
Reason why:IT IS DIFFICULT TO SAY WHO THE INDIAN OF THE YEAR IS becaause THERE aRe SO MANY UNKNOWN HEROES FIGHTING THE DEFECTS IN THE SYSTEM , MAKING LIFE BETTER FOR OTHERS AND TO ME THEY ARE THE TRUE INDIANS OF THE YEAR .
BUT AMARTYA SEN'S FEAT IS HIGHLY COMMENDABLE, RECEIVING WORLDWIDE ATTENTION AND MOST OF ALL MAKING US ALL FEEL PROUD OF OUR LAND. SUCH AWARDS AND RECOGNITION THAT COME FROM TIME TO TIME RELIEVE US FROM FALLING BACK ON THE PAST FOR GLORY AND MAKE US THINK POSITIVELY ABOUT THE FUTURE.

Name:Janardhan Lavakumar

Nomination:Sachin Tendulkar
Reason why:While Sen's achivements are noteworthy, they have only a theoretical value. The nuclear bomb was a scientific landmark, but fulfilled no particular purpose, with the security situation in J&K being as bad as ever. The only Indian who has made a real difference this year is Sachin. He has shown the world that he is the best and has single-handedly carried the Indian team to a win in Sharjah.
Name:S J Bakshi
