Name: S M Dahran
Email: sukumar@del2.vsnl.net.in
Nomination: Dr A P J Abdul Kalam
Reason why: A model of quiet achievement in a time when priorities are skewed, mediocrity is rewarded, and accountability is dead. A role model for the scientific community in the manner he has come up from purely home-grown origins to the forefront of scientific research management.

Name: J Hari Baskar
Email: IMCEAMS-RSINET_EXCHANGE1_harij@rsi.ramco.com
Nomination:Dr Abdul Kalam
Reason why: For the heights he has taken us to...

Name: R SRIKANTH
Email: srikanth025@hotmail.com
Nomination: N T Ramarao
Reason why: As soon as N T Ramarao became chief minister he gave more importance to the poor. He reduced the price of rice to Rs 2 a kg, made arrangements to get people employment and took many other measures to aid the poor. Overall, he was the most outstanding chief minister I have ever seen.

Name: Nalin Kumar Thakur
Email: nalint@hotmail.com
Nomination:The Common Indian
Reason why: For tolerating so many bunches of jokers -- right from our politicians to our cricket selectors. He is sick of hearing words like secularism, anti-communalism, working for national interest, etc. He is being taken for grand ride by every one worth his name. Yet, he is optimistic and hopes that things will improve.

Name: GEETA DASWANI
Email: daswani@stsvr.showtower.com.tw
Nomination: Shahrukh Khan
Reason why: I think he is one of the best actors India has seen so far. He was really good in Pardes. Keep up the good work, Shahrukh.

All put together, that is India's Prime Minister I K Gujral

Name: Laeeq M Khan
Email: laeeq@apache.mt.att.com
Nomination: Abdul Sattar
Reason why: He is a common man like any of us, yet he rose to the occasion and saved the lives of many children in the recent tragedy when a school bus fell into the Yamuna.

I think people and deeds like these should be highlighted, rather than the gimmicks of those dirty politicians.

Name:Ravi M
Email:munjuluri@hotmail.com
Nomination:The Indian Army
Reason why:Without the Indian army and other peace-keeping forces, India could not have withstood the onslaught of mercenaries and terrorists. India's enemies want to see us in shambles, disintegrated and disoriented. But the Indian army keeps India's hopes high, not letting external and internal forces affect the nation's security.

Name: Nithin Sreedevan
Email: nithin@4nc.com
Nomination: Illayaraja
Reason why: His contribution to the arts is unparalleled. His music is a unifying factor in the whole of south India. Illayaraja's creativity is something that one cannot easily come across in any field of art. We must recognise his genius and hard work.

Name: hari_k_tadepalli
Email: hari_k_tadepalli@ccm.co.intel.com
Nomination: Sunderlal Bahuguna
Reason why: A truly Gandhian leader of our times, he fought for the welfare of the people and the environment at large.

Name: SekharBabu Yerraganji
Email: yerragsb@email.uc.edu

Reason why: He is trying to keep India well in pace with technological advancements worldwide, without swadeshi prejudices. He is also trying to keep India apace with the US in computer technology.

Name: Srinivas Iyer

Nomination: Dr Abdul Kalam
Reason why: For giving those of us in science, hope.
For his dedication to the country's interests, which our "leaders" lack.
For being an outstanding citizen, setting an example to young Indians.
For his grit and determination to succeed in the face of several odds.

Name: Ranjan K Mishra
Email: mranjank@hotmail.com
Nomination: No One
Reason why: No one -- and I mean no one -- is eligible to be the Indian of the year.

Name: Satya
Email: gv_satya@hotmail.com
Nomination: Dr A P J Abdul Kalam
Reason why: What does one have to say about someone like him?

Name: Anand

Nomination: Dr A P J Abdul Kalam
Reason why: A great scientist of India who preferred to stay and work in India.

Name: Manish
Email: mjain1@hotmail.com
Nomination:The Bihari Common Man
Reason why: He proved that we still have Ram rajya in Bihar. Laloo nominated his wife who will stand in for her pati parmeshwar until he is back in his seat. Hats off to our Common Man and his tolerance. And wake up. It's about time.

Name: peter paul imalla
Email: imalla@okstate.edu
Nomination: K R Narayanan
Reason why: He is one of India's greatest diplomats with a clean image. He has proved that he can take a decision on his own despite many pressures. He is a man given to ideals and has got vision. I hope he will lead the nation into the 21st century. Jaihind!

Email: sharvis@charlie.cns.iit.edu
Nomination:T N Seshan
Reason why:No reason

Name: Balu Ramachandran
Email: rambal@co.tidewater.com
Nomination: K R Narayanan
Reason why: For upholding the integrity of the position of the President of India.

Name: Annamalai Viswanathan
Email: anvis@wsunix.wsu.edu
Nomination: Mother Teresa
Reason why: She epitomised dignity, grace and selflessness. She lived for the masses, asked nothing of them and held true to her convictions to her dying day. She is not only the Indian of the Year, she is the Human Being of the Year. In a country and a planet frequently characterised by greed, corruption and a me-first attitude, she was the lone saving grace.

Name: S Madig
Email: madig@usa.net
Nomination: Nara Chandrababu Naidu
Reason why: Great person! Understands social justice well.

Name: Shrikant S
Email: sshrikant@usa.net
Nomination: Tim Grandage & Shalini Devi Holkar
Reason why:The names may be unfamiliar. Tim Grandage of Project Hope, Calcutta, shunned the comforts of a comfortable job in a multi-national bank in Calcutta and decided to bring relief to the street children.

Shalini Devi Holkar, of the royal Holkar family, has worked in the sleepy town of Maheshwar in MP for the betterment of the Maheshwari saree weavers.

Both these unknown citizens of this country deserve to be Indians of the year.

Name: Chakkarapani S
Email: IMCEAMS-RAMCONET_RAMCOHUB_schakra@rsi.ramco.com
Nomination: Sitaram Kesri
Reason why: In 1947, Mahatma Gandhiji suggested that our countrymen dissolve the Congress. But his request went unheeded. Fifty years later, one man works tirelessly to realise this dream of Bapu. The man is Sitaram Kesri and hence my vote.

Name: Prashantha Kumar N
Email: prashu@idc.tandem.com
Nomination: I K Gujral
Reason why: India is desperately looking for a leader who can lead India to a great position on the world stage. None of our national level leaders can achieve this other than Gujral.

Name: Pradip Parekh
Email: PradipSp@aol.com
Nomination: K R Narayanan
Reason why: Simply for having the courage to do his job right -- isn't it a shame that one should feel compelled to nominate a public servant as the man of the year just for that? Makes you wonder if this whole exercise is worth the effort.

Name: Dr Abhijit Sengupta
Email: ov@vanna.mit.edu
Nomination: Dr A P J Abdul Kalam
Reason why: Without any doubt, it has to be none other than Dr A P J Abdul Kalam. He is an ideal and rare example in Indian history. Hope his achievements motivate the government to invest in quality science education.

We need leadership, expertise and vision like Dr Abdul Kalam to transform a culture of folklore, superstition and 1001 social evils to a culture of reason... that is the future India needs.

Name: Saju Joseph
Email: saju.j@usa.net
Nomination: Mr K R Narayanan
Reason why: He upheld the value of democracy and the Indian Constitution by taking two appreciable decisions -- one, when he refused to dissolve the U P assembly and the other when he dissolved the Indian Parliament. He has shown virtues necessary for an Indian President and is alone worth nominating to be the Indian of the year, 1997.
