The Rediff Indian of the year

The Nominations...

Name:BOBBY PANNAPARA
Email:bobbypanna@hotmail.com
Nomination:APJ KALAM- THE ROCKET MAN
Reason why:HE HAS GIVEN US A SENSE OF PRIDE IN OUR ACHIEVEMENTS. WE, SADLY, ARE VERY CRITICAL OF ANYTHING INDIAN, BUT IF THE WEST ENDORSES IT, WE TAKE PRIDE IN IT. WE HAVE TO START BELIEVING IN OUR FUTURE AND SPARE NO EFFORTS TO MAKE IT GRAND, RATHER THAN HARPING ON OUR PAST GLORIES. INDIANS IN THE PAST EXCELLED BECAUSE THEY WERE THE TREND SETTERS RATHER THAN THE FOLLOWERS AS IS THE CASE NOW.

Name:Gopinathan
Email:osgopinathan@vsnl.com
Nomination:Committed ordinary Indian
Reason why:We need to recognise such Indians who make a committed attempt to help society without looking for any return -- people like the librarian from Tamil Nadu who works selflessly. No politician qualified for the award.

While Sachin, Anand have achieved a lot, they do not make a difference.

During the year, when the political situation was uncertain, he came up well and done good to the state and ran government like a business. His vision is good and is sincerely putting down in action, slowly and surely. He turned to be a model politician in India at least.

Full marks to Chandrababu Naidu.

Nomination:Dr Amartya Sen
Reason why:Of course, the Nobel Prize and his recognition as a great economist in the world.

Name:Diptarup Chakraborti
Email:dipto@hotmail.com
Nomination:Sachin Tendulkar
Reason why:Never in its history has one man lifted the colloective morale of a nation like Sachin has. His exploits on the cricket fields has been so incandescent that the performance of all others has just been eclipsed no matter how bright.

His innings in Sharjah aginst Australia and his Test nnings against the same team has been incredible.

My nomination goes out for only one reason. He has given us Indians, who have been burdened with so many troubles a reason to smile and cheer.

Long live the King.

Name:Nageswar Rao Vasireddy
Email:vnrao@iimb.ernet.in
Nomination:Chandrababu Naidu
Reason why:In a state where politicians never thought beyond following either Indira Gandhi or later NTR, he has shown state governments too can work with a vision and action plan for overall development. The results are here to see even now: out of the seven so-called fast track power projects, only the two allotted to AP were commissioned.

The power production, investor climate and IT have vastly improved in the state now, solely because of this man's bold and somewhat unpopular decisions. All those unpopular moves were made when he could have easily played "to the galleries" as his father-in-law has done, and thereby increasing wafer-thin popularity with the masses.

Name:Dr Tapan Bhattacharya

Nomination:A B Vajpayee
Reason why:For intiating bold economic and political reforms and making progress in bringing about peace in Kashmir and taking the courageous decision of letting India go nuclear and facing boldly US sanctions.

Name:Sanjeev Gupta
Email:sanjeev.gupta@geis.ge.com
Nomination:Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar
Reason why:India needs heroes, someone who can make them feel that they can do anything that is needed, whatever the situation is, wherever they are.

Today Indians need someone who can make them believe in themselves. Indians need someone who can be honest and dedicated at least to his own work.

Indians need aggressiveness to show the world that they can't be taken for granted.

Sachin is the only one in recent years who has shown these qualities very often. It would have been better if somebody could have shown these qualities in the political or social life of India. But it is the misfortune of India that it lacks people like Sachin in political and social life.

Name:Prakash Choraria
Email:pc53@hotmail.com
Nomination:Prakash Choraria
Reason why:For one, I'm Indian. And second of all, I'm a good person. I guess this is as egotistical as it gets, but that is not my motive. I nominate myself to be the Indian of the year, not for any outstanding achievement in the field of sports, science or perhaps any sphere of life, but because I believe, with all my heart, that I am a good person and a better Indian. I live my life with happiness at every step of the way. These are the reasons why I nominate myself to be Indian of the year.

Nomination:Chandrababu Naidu
Reason why: He started a new way of professional politics.

Name:Akhil Venkateshwaran
Email:akhilvav@yahoo.com

Name:kumar.s
Email:kumar3@hotmail.com
Nomination:Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi
Reason why:Last year also their name cropped up, but they didn't win it.This year also they have achieved laurels for india through their performance.

The Nobel committee has recognised Dr Amartya Sen. But these guys need recognition for what they have done for their country by their sheer guts and determination. So my award goes to them.

Everything will just follow We need more CEOs...oops... politicians like him

Name:nikhil mogre
Email:nikhil59@yahoo.com
Nomination:Sachin Tendulkar
Reason why:You do not need to explain why.

Name:Balamurali Sundaresan
Email:s_balamurali@rocketmail.com
Nomination:A P J Abdul Kalam
Reason why:What many Indians lack is the spirit of being Indian. At a time when many Indians look up to the West for science and technology, Kalam has proved that how such a notion could be wrong. He gave every Indian a sense of pride, confidence which certainly cannot be compared against any other achievements.

Sir (Kalam), I salute thee.

Name:Riz Khan
Email:riz_14@yahoo.com
Nomination:Sachin Tendulkar
Reason why:B'coz of him India won a lot of championships. Everyone is proud of India.

Name:Akhtar H I Bhamla
Email:bhamla@vsnl.com
Nomination:Sachin Tendulkar
Reason why:I have nominated him because he has proved to be the best in his field which is a rare achievement for an Indian. Moreover, he is modest which is apparent from the manner he is always normally out on the ground to greet his teammates coming back after a win although most of the times it his he who has laid the foundation for the win and also that he is senior to most of them apart from being more talented. He has not let his fame and position go to his head.

Talent is a gift of God but modesty is a virtue which one cultivates with great difficulty.

Hence for his super-eminent position in his field, his extraordinary talent and his unbelievable modesty, I nominate him as the Indian of the year.

Name:S K
Email:idg_inc@hotmail.com
Nomination:N Chandrababu Naidu

Nomination:Sonia Gandhi
Reason why:She rekindled hope and expectations of the INDIAN MASSES. Moreover, she is quite mature.

Name:Ramesh Khater
Email:ramesh_khater@hotmail.com
Nomination:Sonia Gandhi
Reason why:Sonia Gandhi is the Indian of the year because she is the sole reason behind rejuvenating the dying political party. She not only brought back the glory of the party but also gave hope to all those who don't agree with the ideologies and communalism of the governing party. The chequered history of the Congress was at its lowest ebb in the past 7 years and with the advent of Mrs. Gandhi on the scene, the century-old party is not only able to keep its flock together but also surge ahead with confidence. That's what the LS polls and assembly elections have shown.

Name:Bijan Mohanty
Email:mbijan@hotmail.com
Nomination:Amartya Sen
Reason why:He is the first Asian to win a Nobel Prize in economics.

Name:Dr.Utpal Sheth
Email:svs@bom4.vsnl.net.in
Nomination:Common Middle Class Indian
Reason why:Does it still require to mention why?The common Indian has to be complimented for being tolerant to all the politicians of India who for an election took the onion cause, emerged victorious and then forget about onions and claimed to be a secular party aiming at the votes of the minorities at the cost of the majority taking them for granted.

Though there are others who would like to be recognised, yet I feel that these people have made the rest of the world look at INDIA in awe and they truly truly deserve the REDIFF ON THE NET INDIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD.

Name:
Email:
Nomination:Abdul Kalam
Reason why:This is one patriotic Indian, who, through long years of tireless toil and dedication to the Indian nation, has through mostly indigenous means, developed missile technology to protect India from potential foreign invaders. Not only has Dr Abdul Kalam led the missile development effort for India, but he has also articulated on the how India's peaceful posture has in the past several centuries been exploited by evil foreign powers to capture territory and subjugate Indians.

Dr Kalam has very cogently justified the need for India to guard itself against this possibility in the future and has juxtaposed India's missile programme in this context.

Name:Vasudev G S
Email:gosiva@hotmail.com
Nomination:A P J Abdul Kalam
Reason why:His steadfast goal in giving India the much needed boost for self defence. And keeping up to the saying, being prepared is the best form of self-defence. Let never the China debacle ever be repeated.

Reason why:Computer Revolution in AP...... Hopes of spreading it round the country.

Name:Sanjoy Moulik
Email:moulik@earthlink.net
Nomination:Sachin Tendulkar
Reason why:The only Indian who has made us proud time and again. Professor Sen's Nobel Prize is great, but doesn't help us in any way. Same goes for the nuclear blasts. It is a historic achievement, but India had to pay dearly for it and in the long run may not turn out to be such a good idea. At least it hasn't helped India's cause in the international market.

Sachin Tendulkar, Professor Sen's Nobel Prize and the nuclear blasts -- all made us proud, but India benefitted only from Sachin's heroics in the cricket field.

Name:Prashant Pimpalekar
Email:prashant_pkp@hotmail.com
Nomination:Sachin Tendulkar
Reason why:Eventhough Sen won the Nobel Prize, the average Indian (more appropriately the Indian youth) empathises more with Sachin Tendulkar than anybody else!!! The little master (who is recently nominated as one of the Top Ten Batsman of all times) truly is the role model for millions of Indians, one bright spot in the otherwise drab story of India Inc!!!

Name:M. V. Guruprasad
Email:gpmysore@michiana.net
Nomination:Nara Chandrababu Naidu
Reason why:I nominate Mr Naidu for his leadership and courage in embracing information technology as a tool to change the lives of the common public. In this nation of mediocre and myopic leaders, he stands out for his brilliance and vision; a vision which I believe can transform Andhra Pradesh and, eventually, India. I wish him good luck and, more importantly, electoral success in the future elections.

Name:Murari Gopalan
Email:mgopalan@uiuc.edu
Nomination:Sachin Tendulkar
Reason why:He's the greatest cricketer of all times and he has proved that again this year.

Reason why:For having shown that an Indian can be acknowledged as the Best in the world by the Rest of the world too.

Name:S Ghosh
Email:sghosh@saatchii.com
Nomination:Sachin Tendulkar
Reason why:Performance. Not lamba chowda baat. Symbolic of the way the world is going. Perform or perish.

No other Indian has carried the hopes of so many. No other Indian has sparked the imagination of so many. No other Indian has made us feel good about being an Indian so many times in the same year. No other Indian has made us hold our heads high in the face of such immense competition.

We are a nation of losers. At least somebody changed that -- albeit temporarily -- to say we can also win. If we want to. My vote goes to the young man called Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.

Nomination:Mario Miranda
Reason why:Politics and economics aside, the ability to look at ourselves with great aplomb and humour, Mario Miranda gets my vote.

Name:Umesh Jain
Email:umesh.jain@citicorp.com
Nomination:Ajay Jadeja
Reason why:I think the Indian of the year has to be a cricketer. Reasons galore / obvious And within cricketers, Jadeja is my choice.

Most consistent -- yes even more than Sachin Tendulkar (though does not match Tendulkar's cricketing skills).

The only player who seems to enjoy what he is doing and sounds encouraging.

A thinking cricketer despite the limitations on skills.

He gives his best all the time -- if not by batting then saving those 20 extra runs that would have definitely been lost had he not been fielding in those positions

We need more such performers and foot soldiers than the leaders and people who just talk. This is my tribute to this karm yogi. Cheers!!!!

Name:Vishal Gupta
Email:vishal@jewelpalace.com
Nomination:Sachin Tendulkar
Reason why:Everything for India has gone wrong this year. The government has not performed well. The economy has suffered due to unwanted things, so Sachin was the only one who has done India proud by A GOOD PERFOMANCE AT the INTERNATIONAL LEVEL.
