Reason:I nominate, amongst all the Indians, Vajpayee as not only the Rediff Man of the Year but also the the first Millennium Man of the 21st Century.
Mr. Vajpayee has been the most successful PM of India in its most turbulent period of her existence. I call it the most turbelent because India is passing through a stage of Macro and Micro Economic reforms. Economic reforms are the most difficult process for any country, for we have seen many prowling economic tigers of the past either lying dead or wounded. Also he is put in a situation where he had to cobble up a majority in the Parliament amongst 25 odd political parties, each party having its own internal dissensions of various magnitude.
He should also be praised and admired for the courage that he has shown in offering to build a peace bridge to the tattered Pakistan whose existence is ebbing on the ongoing Kashmiri claim.
The best way for Indians to further disintegrate the Pakistan is by offering peace to her because Pakistan as a nation survives only on the hardcore hatred for India. Once they have nothing to quarrel with India, Pakistan ceases to be a nation. No one understands with absolute clarity than Vajpayee.
He has also been successful in formulating a foreign policy which is accepted and condoned by the major nations in the world including the European Unions, Russia, China, USA in addition to scores of smaller countries.
I wish him all the success in his efforts to find a solution to the contentious issue of Ayodhya which is being used by most of the politicians in India as a political tool to bank on votes.
Now Vajpayee has either directly or indirectly sounded the nation as to which side of the faction he is inclined to lean. By doing so he has thrown a challenge to all those Sonias, Mulayams, Basus, Jaipals, to categorically say which side of the faction they are willing to side with.
They are now obliged to offer the nation an alternative to Vajpayee's suggestion or accept it to close the issue once for all.
No one has any right to hold the nation to ransom without offering alternative. If they have no alternative, they should accept what others have to offer and start concentrating on other areas of nation building.
