Army chief calls for co-operation with navy and air force
Army chief General V P Malik on Wednesday called for complete co-operation between the army, navy and air force to prepare for
the spectrum of modern-day conflict ranging from low
intensity conflicts to nuclear, biological and chemical
warfare.
He was addressing the Army Commanders Conference -- his first after taking charge -- in New Delhi.
General Malik dwelt at length on the need for a constant drive to
consolidate combat effectiveness and maintain a high state of
professionalism in a cost effective way.
The conference, which is held twice every year, reviews the
strategic environment, operational effectiveness, training, human
resource development, organisational matters and welfare measures.
Besides the generals commanding all army
commands, the training command principal staff officers at
the army headquarters also participated in the conference.
A Combined Commanders Conference of the three services along with
separate conferences for each are held twice every year.
The separate conferences of the three services are chaired by the
army chief, air chief and naval chief respectively.
At the air force conference, Air Chief S K Sareen reiterated his views
on converting the Indian air force into an 'air and space
force.'
''The country should be prepared to extend the air
arm to encompass the element of space as
well," he said, "Historical examples like the Gulf and Bosnia wars have
highlighted the need to
sharpen this weapon for ensuring its effectiveness."
