HC asks for report on Mayawati's 'bungling' in 4 months

The Allahabad high court has asked the Comptroller and Auditor General of India to complete the inquiry into former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati's alleged bungling in the construction of Ambedkar parks within four months.

With regard to the other cases involving Mayawati, the judges asked the state government to complete its inquiry in two months.

The court passed the order on a petition filed by L B Singh, secretary of the Good Cause Association (a non governmental organisation), seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the ex-CM's action.

The petition alleged that Mayawati spent Rs 3.05 billion on constructing Ambedkar villages, and that she cornered about Rs 7.80 billion by transferring 1,750 government officers during her brief tenure. At least 15,000 Ambedkar statues were installed during her regime without sanction by the state cabinet, it said.

Singh also claimed the CM had taken Rs 25,000 every month from each of her ministers for including them in her government.

The petition had also alleged that Mayawati spent Rs 40.5 billion on the Greater Noida scheme, in violation of rules. The court, however, disposed this charge on CBI counsel Giridhar Nath's statement that the inquiry into the Greater Noida bungling would start shortly.

Monday, UP Advocate General R P Goel informed the court that the government has sent the matter for inquiry to the CAG. Whereupon, the court asked him to submit a report in four months time.
