Subject: Arti Dwarakadas's pilgrimage

What a great story! I feel the same emotion when I attend Krishna Leela bhajans at Swami Prakashnand Saraswathi's International Society of Divine Love.

Arti says people in Mathura talk as if they come across Krishna's leelas in their lifetime. Ask her (him!) to read this story herself! She also talks the same way! Why do we have to care whether it is a myth when it fills the void in the mind!

Subject: I K Gujral

Prime Minister I K Gujral is often described as decent but incompetent, a sort of bumbling bhadralok.

Here's what I personally know of him. In 1978, as students at IIT-Delhi, my friends and I were busy sending applications to American universities. Mr Gujral was then India's ambassador to the former Soviet Union. One of my friends, Inder-jeet Singh Gujral, was surprised one day to receive a large package from the Indian embassy in Moscow. Inside the package were letters addressed to I J S Gujral, sent by the universities to which he had applied, but delivered by the Indian postal service to Ambassador Gujral in Moscow, who had redirected them!

Needless to say, we were astonished. After all, official India teaches one never to expect simple courtesies.

Subsequently, IJS and I went to interview Ambassador Gujral at his home in Delhi for the campus rag. He received us in the garden, answered our questions politely, and saw us off with exemplary courtesy.

Unfortunately, good men are not necessarily great men, specially in politics.

Subject: Your article on literacy in India

I think this article is a lot of bullshit. This guy Dr Sankdher (I hope my spelling is right) is talking like the (illiterate) political figures that rule this nation. He should come down from his high horse and should check it out for himself what the state of affairs is when it comes to education in our country.

I have studied at BITS, Pilani (one of the allegedly premier institutions in India) and am now at the Univ of Florida for my MS programme. I am here because I don't think I will get top quality education in India. These figures that he quotes regarding the number of literates might be true, but the fact that we are the second most populous nation in the world is being overlooked

In his article if we have 100 guys in our country and we have 20 literates out of them (which is an exaggeration in India's case) and if we compare our statistics with a country that has only 40 guys as the total population and if they have 50% literacy (much better than ours) we still end up having more literates than them. The question is not how many -- the point is what percentage? That's what makes a difference in improving the standard of human life in the long run -- I can't believe the good doctor overlooked this fact!

I can't believe that Rediff can put up such a shallow article! Already I feel so ashamed reading about the happenings in India in your news section...and now some quack's article appears as one of your main stories! I do not blame the guys who don't ever want to return to their home in India...

The page was good. The story well told with a bit of humour mixed in, but the avi clips were very big. It took a lot of time to download. Couldn't you convert them to realmovie format?

All in all, it was a good page.

Ms Varsha has hit the nail on the head. The BJP did put up with much insult and every whim of the Mayawati -Kanshi Ram duo who are totally bereft of any sense of decency. They are more dangerous to the nation than Dawood. Varshaji is right in asking for the BJP to be more aggressive and not comprise with its principles. As usual, well done Varshaji!

Subject: Curtain Call For Congress

Today, the b-word is "Compromise" and "Common Minimum Programme." By denying decisive victory to the BJP, we Indians are paying for our own deeds. For democracy, we have to bear the cost of several re-elections more, apart from the present mess and chaos. For the BJP, if this is what it takes to be in power and to seek a majority, so be it.

Engineer more defections. When the so-called secular parties are bent upon keeping the BJP out of power by hook or crook, I do not see any other alternative way for the BJP. But as you rightly said, one has to have the guts to throw out the corrupt (by ideology and practice) newcomers to the BJP at the right time, once the BJP gets a majority to chalk out its own course. With the RSS and its ideologically pure gurus in the core, I believe the BJP will muster that courage in future. At present, however, by all means we wish the BJP headway. Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamaya!! Do we have any other way?

Bullshit.

It is a well known fact that K R Narayanan will not dismiss the DMK government. So there is no fear about that. Even then Jaya is nowhere in the scene to capture power in TN. Subramanian Swamy, R Venkataraman, Cho may only day dream about the dismissal of the DMK government. As long as gentleman like K R Narayanan occupies the President's seat, these brahmins's greeds will never be met.

Subject: Fire power!! Cool Piece!!

I think that this is the kind of movies that India should try to make. Not song singing and stupid dancing movies.

Film-making is a responsibility, an expression, a representation of our society. Movies reach many people at a personal and emotional level. I really appreciate when people try to tackle serious issues that need to be addressed.

I applaud this article as well as the movie's producer and director.

I have not seen the movie, so I cannot comment on the quality of the movie. But I can say that at least the issue touched here is IMPORTANT. Nice work Mehta....

Another thing... I think the interview could have been handled better... Some very stupid questions were asked... "What about Space???" (a very stupid comment or question, whatever it is)

The interview was well-taken.

Deepa Mehta should go ahead. After all, there are thousands of films out there and people would always find some relevance to someone else's already completed film(s). Should people stop producing new films then? Every film is different in time and space. Hence, Deepa Mehta should continue with her films.

Good luck and thanks for the report,

Subject: A Renegade's Story

We did like to know of what rehabilitation steps are being taken by our government for these youngsters? People accessing the net are definitely well enough to make some contributions for the betterment of these ill-fated youngsters.. it would be helpful if one could come out with some arrangement for any kind of help or contribution that reaches them.

Being an active player in the media, you should not just stop at bringing this news to us. Bringing such articles to us is really appreciable but we could probably take it a little further by trying to help these people. Such awareness of these facts will definitely help in arousing compassionate feelings towards these youths. But putting something action would be more practical.
