Corrupt income tax official arrested, Rs 10 million recovered
The Central Bureau of Investigation has unearthed assets worth more than Rs 10 million from income tax officer R C Bakshi after he was arrested in New Delhi for accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a businessman.
The sleuths recovered Rs 3.33 million in cash from Bakshi's residence. Searches of his three bank lockers on Saturday yielded another Rs 1.8 million in cash. Besides, fixed deposit receipts
and cash certificates worth Rs 1.2 million were recovered from the
officer's residence and lockers.
The officer also owns two houses worth at least Rs 4.5 million in
Delhi, CBI sources said.
Sources said the CBI's anti-corruption branch laid a trap at Bakshi's residence following the businessman's complaint that the officer, who was
scrutinising his income tax returns for the past four years, had
demanded a bribe of Rs 100,000. The officer was caught red-handed while accepting
the first instalment of Rs 10,000.
The duty magistrate at Tis Hazari courts on Saturday remanded Bakshi to 14 days
judicial custody.
