Power reactor being sold to India cannot make nukes: Russia
Russia has rejected US allegation that the two nuclear power reactors
it proposes to supply to India could be used for producing nuclear
weapons.
Russian atomic energy ministry spokesperson Georgy Kauruv accused
Washington of trying to oust Russians from the Indian and other
Asian markets in the nuclear energy field.
He was reacting to US opposition to the deal on sale of Russian
nuclear reactors to India.
US State Department Spokesman Nicholas Burns had cautioned Russia
on Thursday against going ahead with the proposed deal insisting
that it was in violation of the 1992 accord reached among the
nuclear nations.
"Russia is fully committed to its deal with India,"
a competent source said. The Russian official spokesman further
reminded US that India is a full-fledged member of the International
Atomic Energy Agency and all the work connected with the nuclear
plant project in India is in line with the requirements of the
world body.
The US had made a similar futile bid to checkmate Russia from
delivering nuclear power plant to Iran.
