Cops search for blast suspect

The police are on the look out for a person who had given a fictitious name and address, and had escaped just before the bomb blast in the ill-fated compartment of the Madurai-bound Pandyan Express at the Tiruchirapalli railway junction. Four people died in the blast.

Top police sources said that, on verification at Madras, it was found that the passenger belonged to the Pudupet area in the city. It was suspected the blast was the handiwork of some fundamentalist organisation.

The sources said the investigation would be intensified further after the return of Inspector General of Police (crime) D Manoharan to the state headquarters after visiting the Thottipalayam bomb blast site today.

Investigation of the Tiruchirapalli and Thottipalayam bomb blast cases would be formally handed over to the crime branch, the sources said.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened on vital installations in the railway network, including bridges and railway stations. The Railway Protection Force Personnel made a thorough check of the coaches and luggage of all passengers with the help of metal detectors and sniffer dogs, the sources said.
