'All affluent Indians have left Fiji'

January 13, 2009
T P Sreenivasan, former ambassador to Fiji and Myanmar, pointed out that India has always supported its Diaspora population in other countries and spoken out about their problems. He pointed out that India had raised the issues of racial discrimination and apartheid at the United Nations.

"Earlier, 52 per cent of the population in Fiji were Indians. Now, ethnic discrimination has reduced that to 36 per cent. All affluent Indians have left Fiji and moved to developed countries," he said.

"Painting a grave picture about the future of POIs in Fiji, Sreenivasan said, "Forty years ago, Indians were chased out of Burma, and they were not even allowed to take their belongings. The same will happen to Fiji. When all the rich Indians leave, only poor, penniless and landless PIOs will be left behind. They will become stateless".
