The condition of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is undergoing treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, is improving and his dependence on ventilator support has reduced, doctors attending on him said on Wednesday.

"His condition has improved. He is stable now," Superintendent of AIIMS, D K Sharma told PTI.

Doctors attending on him found that the condition of his lungs has significantly improved and the levels of
oxygenation have gone up, which is a positive sign.

A hospital source said a decision on removing the Bharatiya Janata Party leader's ventilatory support would be taken within a day or two.

The former prime minister's basic parameters like heart, kidney, liver and blood pressure were normal.

Head of Cardiac Thoracic Vascular Sciences Department of AIIMS Sampath Kumar had said on Tuesday that "his lungs are clearing up. We have reduced the work of ventilator".

Kumar said the veteran leader's infection has shown signs of reduction and amount of oxygen in blood purified by
the lungs is better.

The 84-year-old leader was admitted to the hospital on February 3 with complaints of fever and chest congestion.
