The health of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Service for chest infection, is showing signs of improvement and his vital parameters are normal, a hospital bulletin said on Tuesday.

84-year-old Vajpayee is in "ICU on ventilatory support. His chest X-ray is better. His ventilatory requirement has
been decreased and vital parameters are normal," the bulletin said.

Head of Cardiac Thoracic Vascular Sciences Department of AIIMS Dr Sampath Kumar had earlier said that "he is alright. He is making progress".

Dr Kumar also said Vajpayee's lungs are improving and oxygenation (amount of oxygen in blood purified by the lungs)
level is better.

Sources at the AIIMS say that Vajpayee is likely to be taken off the ventilator soon.

Dr Kumar said that all the basic parameters of the former prime minister like his heart, kidney, liver and blood pressure were normal.
