In Madurai, Mayawati appeals for a chance

April 5, 2009
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party President Mayawati kick-started her party's election campaign in Tamil Nadu on April 3, addressing a rally near the famous Meenakshi temple in Madurai.

Addressing the 5000-strong gathering, Mayawati reiterated the fact that she has no pre-election understanding with any party or front.

She said, "In the selection of candidates I have given all sections of society a chance to contest. Please do not vote for the BJP, Congress or their allies or to the regional partied in Tamil Nadu. Vote only for the BSP.

"In the 61 years after Independence the depressed classes have remained depressed and the minorities like the Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and Parsis have remained backward. Poverty and lack of jobs have forced our youth to turn to Naxalism. Naxalism has been created by the wrong policies of the people who have ruled for 61 years. We will solve that problem and also the problem of terrorism.
