Five more flights landed on the moon, culminating with the flight of Apollo 17 in December 1972.
In all, 12 men walked on the surface of the moon, and including their time in the lunar excursion module, spent just a few minutes less than 300 hours on the lunar surface. The societal effect of the Apollo program was profound, no more so than in its view of Earth from the moon.
The photographs of 'Earthrise', and of the full Earth as a blue marble suspended in space, fragile and without national boundaries, changed humankind’s view of Earth forever.
