Family members of Indian student Abhijit Mahto, who was killed in university campus violence in North Carolina, have appealed to the Centre to take up the matter with the United States to ensure that such incidents did not recur.
"The loss is irreparable and we do not want such an incident to happen to other Indian students," Abhijit's brother-in-law Soumitra Mahto, who had rushed to Gamariah, where Abhijit's parents Sitaram and Aarti Mahto live soon after receiving the death news, said.
He said the family was expecting the body to reach his hometown near Jamshedpur in the next three to four days.
"The autopsy has been conducted and we are expecting the body to reach here via Ranchi in the next three or four days," he said.
The family had appealed to External Affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee to take the initiative to expedite the process of bringing back the body, Soumitra said.
Meanwhile, the alumni of Jadavpur University in the US will organise a condolence meeting in the Duke university campus on Wednesday to condole Mahto's death, Soumitra said.
Abhijeet Mahato, 29, an IIT alumnus who was studying for an engineering doctorate degree at the Duke University's Pratt School of Engineering in Durham, was found shot dead at his residence near the campus on Friday night.
