A religious guru was arrested on Friday in connection with the stampede at a healing camp that left at least 11 people dead and 20 others injured in a village in Jabalpur.
The police arrested Ishwaridas alias Sarota baba, who had organised healing camps at Katangi in Bharra village on Thursday, claiming to help people get rid of various ailments.
The guru was arrested under Section 304(a) of IPC causing death due to rash and negligent act, Jabalpur collector Sanjay Dube said. Eleven persons, including eight women, lost their lives when sudden downpour forced the crowd to ran for cover, resulting in the stampede.
The magisterial probe into the incident has already begun with the additional collector and ministers visiting the spot, Dube said.
An ex-gratia amount of Rs 50,000 each to the kin of those killed in the mishap has been provided, while assistance of Rs 10,000 to the seriously injured persons and Rs 5,000 to those with minor injuries was being distributed, he said.
Bharra village falls under the constituency of state health minister Ajay Bishnoi, who reached the spot along with senior officials soon after the incident.
