A young couple was attacked near a promenade at a Mumbai suburb on Sunday evening.

The couple was sitting off the Carter Road promenade in Mumbai's suburban Bandra, when three unidentified persons stabbed the boy to death.

22-year-old Rohit Jadhav and his 18-year-old girlfriend were sitting on the rocks off the promenade at Carter Road when the three youngsters approached the couple.

The gang of three youths apparently asked Jadhav to pay for a contribution towards Dahihandi (a game played on Janmasthami) celebrations on Tuesday and when the latter refused to pay, they threatened him with a knife. When Jadhav persisted, they stabbed him.

The girl, who was in a state of shock on witnessing this, screamed but no one came to the couple's rescue since the area was secluded.

She later informed the police. Deputy Commissioner of Police Archana Tyagi told rediff.com, "We are trying to trace the killers. We are finding it difficult to identify the killers as the girl could not see the attackers in the fading light."

Though robberies have been reported from the area, this is the first time that a murder has been reported.
