Punjab has most obese women in India: Study

Where do you find the most obese women in the country? The answer is Punjab, according to a report by the government of India.

The report by the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development reveals that the most number of obese women in the country are found in Punjab, followed by Delhi.

The report titled 'Women in India 2007' states that Punjab and Delhi have the highest number of obese women.

It is further stated that 37.5 per cent of the women in Punjab and 34 per cent of the women in Delhi are obese.

The only other state which has over 30 per cent obese women in the country is Kerala [Images]. The study shows that Kerala has more than 30 per cent obese women.

However, there is a huge contrast in the figures when compared to states such as Bihar and Jharkand.

In Bihar only 5.3 per cent of the women are obese while in Jharkhand the figure is 5.6 per cent. In Karnataka it is 8 per cent while in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh it is 8.6 and 6.7 per cent respectively.

The report also states that in Bihar the number of malnourished women is a whopping 43 per cent, while in Jharkhand it is 40 per cent.
