A Bharatiya Janata Party candidate on Monday won the elections to the Khaga Assembly constituency in Fatehpur district, UP, where polling was held last week.

BJP candidate Ranvendra Pratap Singh won the seat by defeating Congress nominee Usha Maurya by a margin of 7,815 votes. Singh secured 45,109 votes while his Congress rival got 37,294 votes.

The elections in this constituency was countermanded due to the death of Congress candidate Munna Lal Maurya in a road accident. Congress fielded Maurya's wife Usha as its candidate for the polls, which was held on May 24.

With this victory, BJP numbers has gone up to 51. Its ally Janata Dal-United has one seat.
