The Delhi High Court on Monday granted bail to Congress parliamentarian Sajjan Kumar and six others in connection with a 1984 anti-Sikh riot case.
A division bench of Justice Manmohan Sarin and Justice S L Bhayana granted bail to all accused on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 15,000 each and a surety of the like amount.
At the same time, the bench also admitted an appeal, which challenged the trial court judgment acquitting all the accused in December 2002. The court has decided to hear the case on a day-to-day basis from Tuesday.
In December 2002, CBI Special judge Manju Goel had acquitted Kumar and six others due to lack of evidence in the case. The court had also observed that the testimonies of most of the witnesses in the case were contradictory and the prosecution had failed to establish the case.
A criminal case was registered with Sultanpuri police station against Kumar, Jai Kishan, a sitting legislator from Delhi and five others on a complaint filed by the mother of a victim, Navin Kumar, who died in the riot on November one, 1984.
According to the complaint, it was alleged that the mob, which had killed several Sikhs and destroyed many houses in Sultanpuri area, was allegedly led by the Congress leader.
Riots broke out following the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh body guards at her official residence on October 31, 1984.
