Describing the violence during Delhi bandh as a "national shame," the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi governments to submit a report on the incidents in the wake of the Gujjar stir.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the incidents widely reported in the media, a Bench of Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice D K Jain, observed that "the incidents of violence are a national shame."

The judges citing TV footage said "hordes of people" were involved in destruction of public property.

The "mobs were indulging in such violent incidents as if they have done some laudable acts when the TV cameras focused on them," they observed.

The court directed the commissioner of the Delhi police and the director general of Police of Haryana and Rajasthan to file their affidavits within 10 days.

The apex court also appointed senior counsel Rajiv Dhawan as amicus curiae to assist the court in the matter.

The Bench said the amicus curiae will also submit a report after collecting video footage from TV channels and also the inputs collected from respective state governments.

The court then posted the matter for further hearing on June 18.
