Security forces on Thursday morning gunned down two fidayeen who attacked a paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force camp at Zakura, on the outskirts of Srinagar [Images].

Five CRPF troopers were wounded in the initial attack, according to a senior police officer in Srinagar. The injured were taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said two heavily armed fidayeen hurled grenades and opened heavy fire at the sentry post as they forcibly tried to enter the battalion headquarters of the CRPF on Thursday morning.

"The militants were spotted immediately and engaged in a gunfight at the end of which both the militants were killed while five troopers were also wounded," said a senior police officer in Srinagar.

This is the first suicide attack in Srinagar this year.

The firing exchanges and explosions led to panic in the Zakura area and the movement of Amarnath cave-bound pilgrims to the north Kashmir Baltel base camp had to be suspended.

Senior CRPF and police officers have reached the spot.

"Both the militants have been killed and presently the security forces are busy mopping up the operation," S K Singh, inspector general of CRPF, told this correspondent.
