July 16, 2007

An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale rocked Japan's [Images] northwest coast on Monday, killing at least two people and injuring about 260 others.

The impact of the quake was such that it even triggered a fire at the Kashiwazaki nuclear power plant.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was in Nagasaki for a campaign rally ahead of upcoming national elections, rushed to oversee the rescue and relief operations.

The Meteorological Agency has warned that aftershocks could continue to rock the area in the days to come.
