The Central Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating the mysterious death of Rizwanur Rehman following his marriage to the daughter of a Hindu industrialist, on Friday sought more time to submit its report into the incident before the Calcutta high court.

CBI counsel Ranjan Roy pleaded before Justice Soumitra Pal that the investigating agency be granted time till January 7 to submit its report before the court as some formalities were yet to be completed.

The court said it would pass an order on the agency's plea on December 17, when the matter is scheduled to appear.

Justice Pal, on October 16, had directed the CBI to complete the investigation and submit its report before the court within two months.

Rizwanur, a computer graphic designer, had married Priyanka, daughter of industrialist Ashok Todi, under the Special Marriage Act on August 18.

It was alleged that, soon after their marriage, the couple was summoned to Lalbazar police station thrice. And it was on the third occasion that Priyanka returned to her father's home on September 8, following a written assurance by her uncle that she could return to her in-laws after a week. But she never returned.

A couple of weeks later on September 21, Rizwanur's body was found on the railway tracks at Dum Dum, leading to a public outcry in Kolkata.
