"If people of Uttar Pradesh want me to become Chief Minister, then I have to become the Chief Minister. Whatever formalities are to be done would be done at an appropriate time. No decision has so far been taken in this regard," she told reporters after performing the seventh-day rituals of late Kanshi Ram at her residence in New Delhi [Images].

The former UP chief minister said at this juncture that she and the entire party were in deep sorrow and could not think of anything else.

Expressing confidence of her party's victory, Mayawati said her party would be contesting the next Assembly polls on its own not only in UP but also in Uttaranchal and Punjab.

She said law and order would be the top priority for her government, if voted to power. People in the state are reeling under fear and "no law exists in the state".

Asked about the meagre compensation paid by the state government to the family members of those farmers, which committed suicides in Bundelkhand, she said, "If the state government was serious about farmers it would not have resorted to such an exercise."

Earlier, Mayawati fed Bhikshuks and donated money to them after performing the late leader's last rituals following Buddhist traditions.

The Bhikshuks also blessed her to become prime minister of India and visit places of Buddhist importance. On October 18, Maywati would be carrying the kalash of Kanshi Ram's remains to Lucknow, which after darshan at the party Office, would be kept at Prerna Sthal.
