Six miners were killed on Thursday after being trapped in a colliery of Eastern Coalfields Ltd at Andal in West Bengal's Burdwan district, following which the mine caved in, Coal India sources said.

"One body has been extricated and another located. Four other bodies are still trapped under a 60-ft chunk of sandstone, which fell on them at the Shyamsunderpur Colliery," a senior CIL official told PTI over phone from Andal.

The miners were working on night shift when the mine caved in at around 5.30 am, he said.

Three others, who were injured, came out of the pit and were admitted to hospital.

Local CPI-M MP Bangsagopal Chowdhury, who visited the site, said safety in mines was not looked into properly by the authority which led to this kind of accident.

He also demanded that the ECL authorities extend adequate compensation to the family of the victims.
