Five ultras killed in Kashmir Valley

Five militants, including a self-styled commander of Lashker-e-Toiba, were killed in encounters across the Kashmir Valley overnight, officials said on Monday.

The LeT commander, identified as Shabir Ahmad, was killed in a gunbattle with security forces during search operations at Sirkant area of Doda district late Sunday night, officials said.

The gunbattle erupted after troops launched a search operation in the area and were fired upon. An AK-type assault rifle, two magazines, some grenades, a mobile phone handset and an identity card were found on the militant.

In another incident, two unidentified ultras were killed when they ran into an Army ambush in Boban-Walsar forests in Kupwara district in the wee hours of Monday, a defence spokesman said, adding that their identity and group affiliation were being ascertained.

Abu Rehmani, a suspected Jaish-e-Mohammad militant was shot dead by security forces during search operations at Doorusi-Lolab in Kupwara district early Monday, while another militant fell to the bullets of security forces during combing operations in Sheikhnar forest in Sogam area of Kupwara district late Sunday night, officials said.

Militants also shot at and injured Abdul Ahad Bhat, a village headman at Brinjal-Lamand in Qazigund area of Anantnag district last night. Bhat was hospitalised, they said.
