Assam: 59 candidates file nominations

Altogether 59 candidates filed their nomination papers on Wednesday for the second phase of polls scheduled on April 10 in Assam, official sources said in Guwahati.

With this, the total number of candidates for the second phase of polls has gone up to 85. The prominent candidates who have filed their nominations include former ministers Dr Anandaram Barua (Congress), Dr Zoii Nath Sarma (Asom Gana Parishad) and Rajendra Mushahary (AGP-P), sitting legislators Chandan Sarkar (Congress), Bidya Singh Engleng (Congress) besides Prem Singh Brahma (Congress), Keshab Mahanta (AGP) and Uddhab Barman (Commist Party of India-Marxist).

The last date of withdrawal of nominations for the second phase is March 24.

Meanwhile, state Transport Minister Anjan Dutta and former deputy speaker during AGP's last term Renupama Rajkhowa have been served show cause for violating the model code of conduct.

Dutta is charged with using more vehicles than allotted to him as per the model code while Rajkhowa is accused of using a public place for meeting and using loudspeakers without permission.
