The Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards for 2005 were presented today by President APJ Abdul Kalam at a special ceremony.
They were given for outstanding contribution to the field of performing arts.
Presenting the awards, Dr Kalam said that music touches hearts and minds, and has the power to change society. He called upon artists to use their art to achieve a unity of minds. "I am fully convinced that, if this happens, disturbing acts like conflict and terrorism can be reduced," he said.
He also asked the Sangeet Natak Academi to encourage young, budding artists as culture needs nourishment in the form of young performers.
