The Congress has sent a formal letter to the Trinamul Congress stating that it is willing to project its chief Mamta Banerjee as the opposition chief ministerial candidate in the coming assembly elections in West Bengal provided she parted ways with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

West Bengal Congress President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday confirmed this when answering queries on the Congress' willingness to be part of an anti-Communist grand alliance and said, "No doubt Mamta is a popular leader."

The Trinamool chief has so far said she will not part ways with ally BJP.
