World leaders condemn Jordan bombings

November 10, 2005 18:50 IST

United States President George W Bush and United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan Thursday joined world leaders in condemning the "cowardly attacks" in Jordan and vowed to defeat the menace of terrorism.

Bush said the bombings in Amman were "cowardly attacks" on innocent people and their guests and hailed Jordan as the closest ally in the war against terror.

"These barbaric acts again demonstrated the terrible cruelty of the terrorists and the great toll they take on civilised society," he said in a statement. "I send my prayers and condolences, and those of the American people, to the families of all those killed in these attacks and to those who were wounded."

Bush also pledged all assistance Washington could offer "to bring the terrorists to justice".

"Jordan is a key ally in the war on terror and will have all assistance we can offer," Bush added.

The Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said such wanton acts of murder "violate every faith and creed".

Condemning the bombings, Annan urged for an early adoption of a comprehensive international treaty to fight terror.

Pointing out that the people of the Middle East region have particularly suffered from this scourge, Annan underscored the need for collective action against terrorism.

The secretary general, who is travelling in the Middle East to win support for the peace process, has postponed his visit to Jordan scheduled to start Thursday in view of the hotel bombings that claimed 67 lives.
