Prez, Vice Prez, PM greet people on Eid

The President, Vice-President and prime minister greeted people on Thursday on the occasion of Eid, hoping that the festival brings happiness, prosperity and peace everywhere.

In a message, President A P J Abdul Kalam said Eid-ul-Fitr is a joyous occasion which comes after 30 days of fasting and prayers and reminds the people to come forward in the service of humanity and gladden the hearts of the needy.    

"As we celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr, let us work and contribute in whichever way possible to reach help to those affected in recent mishaps and sufferings," the President said.

Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat said the sublime values of care, concern and compassion reflected through mutual sharing and charity of this festival exude the spirit of brotherhood and love and help usher in a humane and compassionate society.

"My heart goes out to the victims of recent tragedies such as earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir, train accident in Andhra Pradesh and the bomb blasts in Delhi. I hope that Eid-ul-Fitr will bring solace and strength to the families of the victims," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said.

He recalled that the festival which comes at the end of the pious month of Ramzan, symbolises austerity, brotherhood and a spirit of sharing.

Meanwhile, the new moon was sighted on Thursday evening. The new moon marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
