In an unbridled attack on the Congress party, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday warned of the 'danger' of an
institution that considered family above the nation.

"The service of the country is not possible by an institution where family is considered larger than the nation," former Union finance minister and Rajya Sabha leader of the opposition Jaswant Singh said in Chandigarh.

He said 'family culture' could not lead to prosperity and added that 'we need to fight against the system'.

"The people should understand the danger the country is facing. In Congress rule, the family is considered above the
nation," Singh said in a reference to the Gandhi-Nehru family.

Singh accused the United Progressive Alliance regime of 'giving no rights to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] despite that fact that he is a responsible man'.

The basic ideology of the UPA's constituents differed, he said.

"The UPA is not a United Progressive Alliance, but a disunited convenient arrangement," he said, adding that the coalition of the Left and the Congress was 'for vested political interests'.

He also lambasted the UPA government for its 'poor handling' of the political situation in Bihar.

On the occasion of the BJP's 'Loktanter Bachao Diwas', the former minister honoured some 50 party workers jailed
during the 1975 Emergency imposed by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi [Images].

He alleged that the Congress party was responsible for the problems in Jammu and Kashmir [Images] and Assam.

He also said that the Congress was behind the attack on Darbar Sahib in 1984 and the anti-Sikh riots.
