The Indian Army has given a roadmap to the Union government for converting the Siachen glacier, the world's highest battlefield, into a mountain of peace, Army Chief General J J Singh said on Tuesday.

"We have given our viewpoint to the government on converting the Saltoro ridge and the glacier into a de-militarised zone," he told reporters.

The army chief was responding to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh's [Images] recent comment on converting the glacier into a mountain of peace.

Special: The world's highest battlefield

Singh, who was speaking to newsmen after a meeting with the visiting Singapore Army Chief Major General Desmond Kuek, refused to elaborate.

Recently, Singh had stressed that the army wanted Islamabad to recognise the existing ground positions on the Saltoro ridge and a monitoring mechanism be set-up as a prelude to any troop pull back.
