Congress leader Pratap Singh Rane has been sworn in as the chief minister of Goa [Images].

He was sworn in at 2330 on Wednesday following hours of frenetic political activity.

Philipe Neri Rodriguez, an independent legislator, will be the deputy chief minister.

Governor S C Jamir administered oath of office and secrecy to both in the presence of hundreds of people at Raj Bhavan.

The rest of the cabinet members will be sworn in today (Thursday), Rane said after the ceremony.

He clarified that no separate trust vote would be held immediately.

"We will conduct it while presenting the budget on March 31," he said.

Rane, on behalf of the Congress-led United Legislature Party, had staked claim after the Bharatiya Janata Party government led by Manohar Parrikar [Images] was dismissed by Jamir earlier in the day.

Rane was elected the legislature party leader unanimously at a meeting of coalition legislators.

The other partners of the ULP are Nationalist Congress Party, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, United Goans Democratic Party and an Independent.
