State funeral for Sayeed in Lakshadweep: Cabinet

The Union Cabinet Monday decided to give a state funeral to Power Minister P M Sayeed, who died in Seoul Sunday night, at Lakshadweep on Wednesday.

An emergency meeting of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Parliament House Monday morning, decided to observe a nation-wide mourning Monday.

The national flag will be flown at half mast throughout the country Monday. In the capital, the tricolour will be flown half mast Tuesday also.

The Cabinet passed a condolence resolution, expressing "profound sorrow" over the death of Sayeed.

At the meeting, Dr Singh expressed deep shock on the sudden death of Sayeed, Information and Broadcasting minister, Priyaranjan Dashmunsi told reporters.

The body of Sayeed will be brought to Delhi Monday night and will be kept at the All India Congress Committee headquarters in New Delhi for some time Tuesday before being taken to Lakshadweep, which the late leader represented in the Lok Sabha for 10 consecutive terms between 1967 and 2004, via Kochi, Dashmunsi said.
